Sotofermoso Garden

Abadía

Cáceres

The Abadía Gardens (Cáceres), owned by Fernando Alvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba, were some of the most beautiful and luxurious gardens of the 16th century, comparable to the royal or most sumptuous gardens of their time. On the banks of the Ambroz River, at the foot of the Hervás mountain range, offering the enjoyment of a beautiful panorama over the river from the garden's viewing points. Linked to the Vía de la Plata, this place was the royal port of the Mesta - where transhumant flocks had to pay tribute - and was also close to the kingdom of Portugal, so it was frequently visited by kings and nobility, and became known by the name of Sotofermoso. Little remains of these past glories, but its structure and beautiful landscape have endured and are well worth a visit.
