Sierra Mágina Natural Park

Jaén

Home to wild goats and wild boars, to holm oaks and gall oaks, to olive and cherry trees.

The Sierra Mágina Nature Reserve contains the highest massif in the province, at an altitude of 2,167 metres above sea level and is approximately 30 kilometres away from the capital. It extends its almost 20,000 hectares of surface between the depressions of the Guadalquivir and the Guadiana Menor, with a very rugged landscape due, above all, to the limestone nature of the rocks that form it. Agriculture is the main activity in the area, dating back to the 15th century; the main crops grown are olives, figs and cherries.

Useful information

What you need to know

  • Cultural information

We find remains of fortifications and castles from the 13th and 15th centuries, such as the towers of Bélmez and Cuadros, the castles of Bedmar, Jódar and Albánchez de Úbeda and the remains of Arab fortresses and walls of Jimena and Cambil.

  • Environmental information

Sierra Mágina is home to species with a very restricted distribution in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. The main vegetation found is of the Mediterranean type, with holm oaks, savins, gall oaks and junipers. You can also find olive trees, cherry trees, almond trees, rosemary bushes and maple trees, the latter starting at altitudes of 1,300 metres. There is also the presence of threatened high mountain flora. As for the fauna, we mainly find kestrels, falcons, golden eagles, white-headed blackbirds, finches, greenfinches and goldfinches. There are also populations of ibex and wild boar. It is also a nesting area for Bonelli's eagle.

  • Information for visits

You can visit any of the two visitor centres to receive all of the information you need about the nature reserve. One is located south of the mountain range, near the village of Mata Bejid, in the municipality of Cambil (A-324 highway, km 15.6). And the other is on the ground floor of the Jimena castle, north of the park (C/ Audiencia, 5, in said town).
