Landscapes worth a visit


This natural park is located in the Basque Country, between the provinces of Álava and Vizcaya and has as its summit Mount Gorbeia (1,482 meters), the highest elevation in both and one of the most popular destinations for Basque hikers. Its landscapes, as well as its diversity of flora and fauna, have a special beauty about them.

This nature reserve has authentic mountain wildlife and cliff‑dwelling life. Some of the most notable species include the marten (Martes martes), wildcat (Felis sylvestris), red deer (Cervus elaphus), goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) and the booted eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus).

  • Cultural information

    This natural area, although it has no inhabited towns, offers visitors the chance to discover the farmhouses of Zuia.

  • Environmental information

    The region stands out for the richness and variety of its flora. Here we find oak groves, beech forests, thickets, alder groves, scrubland, mountain meadows and more.

  • Information for visits

    This area has two visitor centres, one for each province involved. Sarria visitor centre can be found on the southern slope of Gorbeia, Álava, only 2 kilometres away from Álava, along a forest track. You can also find Areatza visitor centre (Arratia Valley) on the northern slope of Vizcaya, a 3-storey building in the town square.
