Tirig

Castellón-Castelló

This secluded town in the Alto Maestrazgo region is home to one of the best samples of Levantine rock art, awarded the World Heritage designation by the UNESCO.Traditionally dedicated to livestock and agriculture (almond and olive trees), Tirig is a small town in Alto Maestrazgo known for one of the most important examples of Levantine rock art. These paintings, awarded the World Heritage designation by the UNESCO, are located in the La Valltorta ravine. Nearly 900 figures have been found there, divided into 17 groups of "covachas", featuring human and animal representations, mainly in hunting scenes, a sign of their pre-Neolithic chronology. The Museum of La Valltorta, located in the town, holds an interesting exhibition with reproductions of these paintings, left by the inhabitants of the Mediterranean basin in prehistoric times.
