Galisteo

In the Alagón valley, province of Caceres, we find the town of Galisteo, declared a Historic-Artistic Site.

Galisteo is located in the Silver Road, or Vía de la Plata, ancient Roman road, later used as a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. During Roman times it was known as Rusticiana, and it housed one of the most renowned "stops" where travellers could either lodge, or connect to a different means of transport. At present, Galisteo is a beautiful walled town, whose fortified enclosure dates back to Almohad times. It is one of the most emblematic and stunning in the whole of Extremadura. Its fronts are from the 13th century, erected with pebbles and cylindrical stones from the river, giving it its unique look. In the interior, the traveller will find an interesting Mudejar element: an elegant apse. This stately medieval example is currently attached to the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The houses within the walled enclosure were arranged around this religious building.
